The colloquial language you note is what makes this book so readable. Written by a Nobel laureate scientist, this sure ain't your usual textbook-speak. His adventures in Japanese are also funny; I hoped someone would bring that up in their LF. I hope you enjoyed a fresh take on the life of a scientist.
Also, we drove by Oak Ridge on our way to Nashville just this summer, so I knew what you were referencing there!
I enjoyed this book very much! I've never been a big reader of humor or even non-fiction. To me nonfiction has always been synonymous with boring and I couldn't imagine a type of nonfiction that would be accepting but in the words of Mark Twain: "Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn't." I enjoyed this introductory portal into the world of non-fiction.
